Volunteers in Ukraine provide free meals to over 3,500 stranded train passengers over two days
According to Ukrainian Railways, many had been waiting for hours for their trains to depart, Rubryka reports.
The volunteers worked on October 30 and 31, handing out hot meals, sandwiches, water, and special snack packs called Zalizni Perekusy ("Railways Snacks")
The assistance came as Russian forces continued attacking civilian trains and railway stations.
The volunteers also set up support stations at railway stations in Lviv, Kyiv, and Dnipro. Passengers on heavily delayed trains and difficult routes can stop there for free hot tea and snacks.
World Central Kitchen helps more than just passengers. Its volunteers also regularly bring treats for dogs Bilka and Strilka, the beloved residents of Shepetivka railway station.
"And here's a thank-you from Bilka and Strilka, the station's favorite furry residents. The volunteers bring them snacks regularly, too," Ukrainian Railways added.
French volunteers have also joined efforts to run a community kitchen and mobile bakery at a school in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district.
Meanwhile, a food truck run by the volunteer project Food Without Borders operates in Kharkiv region. The mobile kitchen can prepare up to 5,000 meals a day.
