Why Orbán’s new policy towards Ukraine is an act of treason against Hungary
For years, Hungarian state media have been spreading hatred and fear towards everything connected with Ukraine. But now, all these actions are shifting into overdrive before our eyes.
Moreover, the Kremlin has sent a team of "political technologists" to Budapest with the aim of manipulating the upcoming elections (vote-buying networks, troll farms, etc.).
Hungarian journalist László Seres is shocked by Viktor Orbán’s election campaign. Read more in his article: I want Zelenskyy to have the last laugh. It is a piece from Hungary about Orbán’s hate machine.
What the Hungarian government is doing is, in fact, treason.
Agents of Russian military intelligence have arrived in Hungary to assist Viktor Orbán’s government, working out of the Russian embassy to "boost" social media algorithms.
The country has declared an increased level of terrorist threat, and the anti-terrorism special unit TEK carried out a robbery of Ukrainian cash-in-transit collectors.
One of the key ministers in Orbán’s inner circle, János Lázár, openly states: the confiscated money will not be returned to Ukraine until Kyiv reopens the Druzhba oil pipeline, which was bombed by the Russians.
At the same time, Hungary somehow does not complain about Russia.
It seems obvious even to a non-lawyer that what we are witnessing includes robbery, embezzlement, threats carried out in a professional capacity, violations of personal freedom, coercion, persecution and blackmail. In the view of Ukrainians, what happened constitutes a "gross violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations".
The actions of the Hungarian government, of course, violate the law "On the Protection of National Sovereignty", according to which Hungary’s sovereignty is breached, and thus poses a serious threat to national security, if political power falls into the hands of individuals or organisations dependent on any foreign authority, organisation or person.
A researcher of Russia and staff member of the pro-government Mathias Corvinus Collegium, Zalán Alkonyi, published a Facebook post outlining in nine points an unprecedented scheme of Russian interference in Hungary’s internal affairs – from diplomatic pressure, intelligence subversion and cyberattacks to the use of automated account networks (bot farms).
The picture becomes complete when recalling the statement by the Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin that Russia "has always been and remains a reliable energy supplier," but that this will only continue if "the leadership of these countries pursues the same policy as today."
Hungarian state media have been sowing hatred and fear toward everything connected with Ukraine for years and now they have switched into overdrive.
Here is a headline from Mandiner, one of the key media outlets of the ruling party: "Ukrainian militants may seize Budapest – a terrifying plan of Zelenskyy has leaked".
What is the source of such "information"? It is the well-known pro-Russian propagandist Diana Panchenko, who "believes that the Ukrainian government is training militants to later send them to Hungary and deploy them at rallies." We should be prepared to see such "news" twice a week.
Perhaps now, one month before the elections, the opposition in Hungary is slightly ahead in the polls.
But three weeks is still a long time.
A "Ukrainian" provocation can be staged at any moment, especially when they are ready to do anything to win. Moreover, the damage has already been done.
As a Hungarian, the author of these lines adds: one can be grateful to Viktor Orbán for showing us through his abnormal and inhumane election campaign, as well as his highlighted ties to the Kremlin what exactly is at stake in these parliamentary elections.
What kind of person strikes, for years and in the interests of the Kremlin, at a country suffering daily Russian bombings? There are three things, once formulated by Orbán himself: "Nothing will be forgotten. Everything will be recorded. Everything will be settled".
