Trump not yet ready to speak of victory in Iran

US President Donald Trump considers it too early to speak of a victory in the war against Iran.

As reported by The Hill, Trump said speaking to reporters on board Air Force One on the evening of 15 March that he was not ready to declare victory in the war against Iran.

"No, I'm not going to do that. There's no reason to," he said.

"I just say they're decimated. I think that we've done damage to them. If we left right now, it would take them 10 years and more to rebuild but I'm still not declaring it," Trump added.

He did not answer a question about whether he was considering a ground operation in Iran to achieve his objectives.

According to Axios, Trump told G7 leaders last week during an online meeting that Iran was preparing to announce its capitulation.

Meanwhile, unofficial reports suggest that the US president's advisers are urging him to wind down the war more quickly, fearing that a prolonged conflict and a spike in oil prices could trigger a political backlash and affect congressional elections.

Iranian strikes on countries in the Persian Gulf have led to a global rise in energy prices. Against this backdrop, G7 countries have agreed to release strategic reserves, while the US granted an exemption from sanctions until 11 April for Russian oil that has already been loaded onto tankers.
