Kallas calls US easing sanctions against Russia dangerous precedent

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has said ahead of a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council on 16 March that the easing of US sanctions on Russian oil sets a dangerous precedent, as it provides the Russians with more funds to wage war.

"We see the easing of sanctions on oil, on Russia, by the US is a dangerous precedent, because right now, we need them to have less money for waging the war than more,"she said.

Kallas also stressed the importance of ensuring that "attention on the Middle East does not take away attention from Ukraine".

She also said that during the meeting of foreign ministers she plans to devote more attention to the issue of pressure on Russia.

The US has lifted sanctions on Russian oil on tankers currently at sea. Washington said the move was intended to stabilise global energy markets after oil prices surged due to the US-Israeli war against Iran and Tehran's attacks across the Persian Gulf, which has effectively paralysed oil exports from the region.

Ukrainian diplomatic circles believe the US decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil will enable Russia to wage war for longer.

Meanwhile, Trump stated that US sanctions on Russian oil will be reinstated as soon as the crisis in the Middle East ends.
