United to win: Germany assembles new batch of 35 Patriot missiles for Ukraine in the coming weeks

Together with several missiles that Germany will transfer from its own reserves to the Bundeswehr, the total number may be about 35 units.

The German Defense Ministry confirmed to the publication that preparations are underway for the delivery. Officials said they successfully persuaded partners to contribute additional missiles in quantities approaching planned targets, but did not disclose the exact number included in the shipment.

The spokesperson for the German Defense Ministry also emphasized that Berlin will continue to support Ukraine with a range of additional systems and components, including:

At the Munich Security Conference, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius proposed that Germany would supply Ukraine with five PAC-3 missiles from Bundeswehr stockpiles if other partners could contribute around 30 additional interceptors. Following his proposal, several countries, including the Netherlands, announced their willingness to join the effort to source more missiles.

Background

According to partner estimates, Ukraine requires about 60 interceptor missiles per month. At the same time, the escalating situation in the Middle East has raised concerns over increased competition for these missiles, as they are also in high demand among US allies in the Persian Gulf.

The approximately 600 PAC-3s Lockheed Martin produces annually are no longer enough to meet the needs of the US and its allies in the Persian Gulf, let alone Ukraine's.

And although Lockheed Martin is increasing PAC-3 production to 2,000 units per year under a deal announced in January, it will be too late to solve the shortage this year.

European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius noted that around 800 American-made interceptor missiles were used in the Middle East over just three days, exceeding the number fired by Ukraine throughout the winter. He added that the European Union is actively considering measures to prevent a shortage of air defense missiles for Ukraine amid increased demand driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

It is worth adding that over the four years of the full-scale war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine, Kyiv received about 600 modern Patriot interceptor missiles.
