Poland in talks with Ukraine on transferring MiG-29s and granting access to missile and drone technologies
Military officials noted that negotiations are ongoing with the Ukrainian side regarding a possible donation of MiG-29 aircraft that have been withdrawn from service.
Warsaw explains that the potential transfer is connected to the aircraft reaching the end of their operational lifespan and lacking modernization potential within the Polish Armed Forces. A final decision has not yet been taken.
The statement adds that the possible donation is being considered as part of allied support for Ukraine and as a step aimed at strengthening the security of NATO's eastern flank. The MiG-29s being phased out are expected to be replaced by F-16 and FA-50 aircraft, ensuring the continued defense capability of Poland's Air Force.
In parallel with the aircraft discussions, Warsaw is negotiating access to selected drone and missile technologies with Kyiv.
In September 2024, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that Warsaw could provide Ukraine with additional MiG-29s, depending on whether Poland had sufficient resources to protect its own airspace.
He also noted that Ukraine had received "around 400 tanks" from Poland, as well as Krab howitzers and Piorun launchers.
As Rubryka previously reported, in May 2023 Ukraine received 14 Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters from Poland, which Warsaw pledged to transfer to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Slovakia, for its part, transferred all 13 of its MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine in April 2023.
