UK pledges £400,000 to support Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons operations in Ukraine

It is noted that the funds will be used to provide Ukraine with equipment, training, expert support, and logistical assistance to increase Ukraine's ability to counter threats related to chemical weapons.

OPCW Director General Ambassador Fernando Arias announced the findings from the organization's third technical mission to Ukraine. Investigators discovered traces of 2-chlorobenzylidenemalonitrile (CS gas)—a tear gas banned for use as a weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention—during their examination of the February 2025 incident in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

It is worth noting that the 109th session of the OPCW Executive Council will take place this week, from July 8 to 11, 2025.

As reported, the special services of the Netherlands and Germany announced the widespread use of chemical weapons by the Russian Federation on the front against Ukraine.

On June 15, the Rubizh operational brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine reported that the Russian occupiers have been using chemical weapons in the Siverskyi direction for the third week in a row.

Moreover, as Rubryka reported, the Russian army's use of dangerous chemicals has become systemic at the front.

Rubryka explored the risks of contamination following attacks on chemical and industrial facilities, detailing how pollutants can spread and outlining long-term strategies to mitigate their impact. For an in-depth analysis, see our article: "Russia's attacks on chemical plants: what is the danger to water and soil and how to identify it?"

Additionally, Rubryka outlined key indicators for identifying the types of chemical weapons used and provided detailed step-by-step guidance on evacuation procedures and first aid measures. The European Union has introduced additional restrictive measures against three Russian military units involved in the development and use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
