Archaeologists Unearthed A Mysterious Entrance To Zaslav Castle

Archaeologists Unearthed A Mysterious Entrance To Zaslav Castle1.07.2025, 7:57 1,430 Photofact.A possible entrance to the underground passage at the Zaslavl castle was revealed to archaeologists on Monday, the Institute of History's Telegram channel reported.Scientists of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus together with the Minsk Regional Executive Committee, Zaslavl City Executive Committee and other interested parties have been excavating for about a month under the direction of Ivan Spirin.Despite frequent rains, the work to uncover the underground passage in the ancient embankment of Zaslavl continued. It was previously reported that on the territory of Zaslavl castle began large archaeological excavations. One of the stated goals is to study the mysterious underground passage, which was found back in the 1970s, but has not yet been investigated. This passage was first discovered back in Soviet times by archaeologist Georgy Shtykhov. Then it was partially cleared: the width of the passage is about 80 centimeters, height - about 1 meter 20 centimeters. However, one of the walls was damaged, so further research was stopped. Now a team of archaeologists, volunteers and students is trying to find out what the purpose of this underground passage was. According to Ivan Spirin, a senior researcher at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the passage may be an underground corridor, a drainage system or a secret passage. The research is taking place in the western part of the castle - near the castle gates of the 16th century, through which princely squads and merchant caravans used to enter the castle. It is planned to finish the work by the end of June, but the terms can be shifted due to weather or findings. If it is possible to determine the exact purpose of the underground passage and the conditions will allow, this object may become open for visitors.Zaslav Castle was built in the XVI century. Now the Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya Church, ruins of the castle gate, ramparts and moats have been preserved in its place.PATREONSupport the website Write your comment You can support the website Charter97.orgMULTI-CURRENCY ACCOUNT FOR ASSISTANCE:Bank's name: Bank Millennium S.A.Address: ul.
