6 Best Cushion Foundations for Your Fastest, Freshest Makeup Routine
It's official: The best cushion foundations are making a comeback (though in K-beauty, where they originated, they never really left). For the uninitiated, instead of a bottle or tube, these formulas are housed in a compact with a sponge saturated in foundation. Just press the included puff into the cushion and tap, tap, tap it onto your skin for an even, streak-free application. (Pro tip: A little goes a long way, so press gently at first and go back in for more as needed.) "The mess-free packaging makes it so much more convenient," says Amanda Gabbard, a makeup artist based in New York and Connecticut. "Cushion foundations are also great for quick touch-ups with easy, buildable layers.”
Convenience is only part of the appeal. Many cushion foundations are also formulated to deliver lightweight coverage with hydrating ingredients that melt seamlessly into your complexion. That makes them “great for anyone who likes natural, lightweight makeup and wants their skin to still look like skin,” says New York City-based makeup artist Natalia Malova. Ahead, we've rounded up the best cushion foundations, including a drugstore pick that exceeded our expectations.

Allure contributing commerce writer Christa Joanna Lee applying the TirTir Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation
Why it's worth it: For years, K-beauty cushion foundations had a reputation for offering just a handful of fair shades, largely because the products were developed for the Korean market. When the TirTir Mask Fit Red Cushion debuted a few years ago, it only had three shades. Fast forward to today: "TirTir probably has one of the biggest shade ranges I’ve seen in a cushion foundation with 40 shades available—I think almost everyone can find the right match," says Malova. Beyond its inclusive lineup, the 2026 Readers' Choice Award winner also features brightening niacinamide with hydrating glycerin and propanediol, smoothing adenosine, and a blend of flower extracts (like hibiscus and wild rose) for antioxidant benefits. "It gives beautiful medium to full coverage while still looking like skin, and it wears really well throughout the day," says Renée Loiz, a makeup artist based in Los Angeles.

“I have to admit, this shade looked a little too light for my current sun-kissed skin when I first opened the compact. But after a little extra tapping and blending, I was pleasantly surprised by how much the formula ‘stretches’ and melts into my complexion. While the included puff doesn't dethrone my beloved Beautyblender (or a trusty foundation brush when I'm getting ready at home), it's incredibly convenient for travel or touch-ups when I don't want to lug my entire makeup bag around. It lives somewhere between a velvety and a dewy finish—hydrating enough to keep my dry skin happy but not so matte that it sucks the dimension out of my skin. Even better, it doesn’t settle into the creases around my nose or the fine lines under my eyes, yet still deliveres enough coverage to blur my melasma and even out my skin tone.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Jung Saem Mool

Allure commerce editor Sarah Han applying the Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion (Note: The outer packaging is limited-edition but the formula is the original.)
Why it's worth it: It's no coincidence that so many K-pop stars seem to have impossibly poreless, glass-like skin—okay, maybe genetics deserve some credit—but legendary makeup artist Jung Saem Mool has certainly done her part. For decades, she’s created the looks of some of Korea's biggest stars, and she later opened the Jung Saem Mool Art & Academy to teach her signature complexion techniques to the next generation of artists.
But for those of us without official makeup training, the Essential Skin Nuder Cushion is essentially her approach to natural-looking skin in compact form. "It’s one of the most iconic Korean cushion brands because it really captures that natural skin finish,” says Malova. The formula treats skin while providing coverage with barrier-supporting ceramides, soothing panthenol, hydrating glycerin, and antioxidant-rich rose extract. “It looks polished but not heavy, and gives you that beautiful 'your skin, but better' effect," she says.

“This was the first cushion foundation I ever tried when I first visited South Korea in 2018. Someone on Jung Saem Mool’s team actually shade-matched me, and I’m obsessed with the match. (I’m wearing 22C Petal Light, which is shocking, because I always go for neutral undertones.) It really meshes with my natural tone (I really don’t like going brighter or darker)—and while I can tell that I have something on, it doesn’t feel like I have anything on at all.
If I’ve learned anything about cushion foundation, it’s about sheer layers, building up, and taking the time to pat the foundation in for a super seamless finish. Not only is this cushion foundation compact and easy for on-the-go touchups, but I don’t need any other tools or the back of my hand (where I apply skin tints or foundations first to warm up with my fingers). Big wins! I’m officially back on the cushion foundation hype train.
P.S. The blue casing I have isn’t the original one it comes in—I just popped the compact into the blue one (which I was also gifted) because I loved the color. Yet another fun element of K-beauty products!” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Banila Co

Allure contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai applying the Banila Co Covericious Ultimate Cover Cushion
Why it's worth it: You probably know Banila Co best for its viral Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm, but don't sleep on the brand's makeup lineup, either. The Covericious Ultimate Cover Cushion has a long-lasting formula that relies on oil-controlling silicones to help makeup stay put, while glycerin adds lightweight hydration to balance out skin. A blend of jasmine, lotus, rose, iris, edelweiss, and other botanical extracts also soothes, conditions, and protects the skin from environmental stressors, providing antioxidant benefits. But let us emphasize here that the transfer-resistant finish will not slip and slide: The brand claims it lasts up to 100 hours (though we wouldn’t recommend putting that to the test yourself).

"Off the bat, I loved that it was pretty easy to determine my shade—a big feat, since I have medium-tan skin with neutral undertones (which doesn't seem to be super-common with foundations, cushion-based or otherwise, based on what I've swatched in the past). But I also adore the feel of the foundation, which gives my skin medium coverage with a second-skin finish. The compact has made it convenient for travel, and it's so good at oil control that my skin looks matte even by the end of the day." —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Allure social media manager Bianca Richards applying the Yves Saint Laurent Skin Affair Soft Glow Cushion Foundation
Why it's worth it: If foundation has historically clung to your dry patches instead of concealing them, Yves Saint Laurent's Skin Affair Soft Glow Cushion Foundation is here to smooth things over. The serum-infused formula pairs moisture-locking squalane, glycerin, and polyglutamic acid—a humectant derived from fermented soybeans that can hold even more water than hyaluronic acid—with brightening niacinamide to support the skin barrier. Meanwhile, amino acid-coated pigments melt seamlessly into skin for a fresh, healthy-looking glow that won't catch on flaky spots, and the breathable, non-comedogenic formula doesn’t clog pores, either. “The only way to describe it is ‘juicy, dewy coverage,’” says Gabbard. “Plus, the floral scent is incredible.” (That said, if your skin is sensitive to fragrance, patch testing first is always a good idea.)

“After coming back from a weekend getaway in Florida, I was on the hunt for a new foundation shade and formula to match my new tan. I decided to try the Yves Saint Laurent Skin Affair Soft Glow Cushion Foundation because I wanted something lightweight that wouldn't feel heavy on my skin, and it's quickly become a summer staple in my routine. It gives my skin a fresh, radiant finish while still feeling breathable, making it the perfect foundation for the warmer months.” —Bianca Richards, social media manager

Why it's worth it: When Allure's senior commerce director, Shanna Shipin, said the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Cushion Foundation "outperformed the prestige and luxury cushion foundations" she's tried, we were all ears. The lightweight, buildable formula combines hydrating glycerin with antioxidant vitamin E (tocopherol) to keep skin feeling comfortable throughout the day, while silica blurs the look of pores for a soft, semi-matte finish. The formula feels light and smooth on skin while resisting sweat and water, so you don't hav
