Ukraine was a major exporter, many countries relied on food. And now thousands of tons of grain are in Ukrainian elevators, and there is no way to export it. This is already exacerbating a catastrophic hunger crisis. We need to ensure the opening of ports: both in order to help Ukrainian producers, and because it is very important for food security, Entem said.
According to the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization Victoria Mikhalchuk, at least 20% of the Ukrainian crop this year may not be harvested or not grown at all. At the same time, the organization, together with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, is working on alternative ways to remove stocks that are already in the elevators.
Our organization calls to unblock the ports in Odessa. We are also working together with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy on alternative export routes so that grain is delivered to other countries of the world. Because many states are highly dependent on grain supplies from Ukraine,” Mikhalchuk said.
Among the countries most affected by the fall in Ukrainian exports, according to Paul Entema, African states are also Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen.
People there are already on the verge of starvation. They already have a situation of a perfect storm due to COVID, a security situation, and most importantly, conflicts. And it is these countries that can no longer rely on grain from Ukraine, so this is fraught with the last straw for them, - said the representative of the World Food Program.
