George Russell: Toto Wolff rejects Helmut Marko's doubts over Mercedes driver's future hopes as Kimi Antonelli nears title

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has rejected Helmut Marko's suggestion that George Russell has little chance of becoming Formula 1 world champion in the future after being outperformed by his team-mate Kimi Antonelli this season.

Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix on Sunday to move to the brink of being crowed the sport's youngest ever champion, with the 20-year-old only needing to finish ninth this weekend in the Mexico City Grand Prix to seal the title with four rounds to spare.

Perhaps the most shocking element of the Italian's historic campaign has been the way he has outperformed Russell, who had begun the season as the clear title favourite after dominating Antonelli during the latter's rookie season last year.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's race in Austin, former Red Bull motorsport advisor Marko told Sky Germany: "Mentally, it's certainly a massive setback and it's a blow. Russell is no longer the number one driver."

"Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him. But Russell is one of the top drivers. I doubt whether he'll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere."

Asked after Sunday's race whether he has a response to Marko's comments on Russell's title pedigree, Wolff said: "I start with Helmut. I mean, he's my Austrian… not so buddy, but I respect his opinion.

"But I think he's wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn't suit him.

"I think that at the beginning of the season, it's maybe difficult to cope with a situation where you're feeling like this is my year to come, and then you have this wunderkind on the other side that starts to really chip away.

"And I believe that in a new season, George, if we provide him a quick car, it's absolutely possible, (he) has absolutely what it takes to win a championship.

"So, I think it's a bit too easy to say, let's forget about all these years where he won in F2 and in F3 in his rookie years and the European championships back-to-back in karting. That's still all there."

Russell had performed with great consistency since joining Mercedes for the 2022 season, exceeding expectations by impressing with Lewis Hamilton as his team-mate for his first three years with the Silver Arrows.

His strong form continued in 2025 as Russell maximised an underperforming car to finish fourth in the Drivers' Championship, more than doubling the points total of seventh-placed Antonelli.

It therefore came as a major surprise when, after Russell won the season opener in Australia, Antonelli reeled off the first five wins of his career in succession to establish a championship lead that he has never looked like relinquishing.

Wolff believes the major regulation change that preceded the 2026 season is the main reason for Russell's struggles, but says it is on the team to help the 28-year-old rediscover his best form.

"George, for all of us in the team, is a champion and has won in every category," Wolff said. "And I think he merits to be put in the group of the very best ones (drivers). We've seen that last year.

"And this year, we've seen this variability in results. When we land the car in the way that suits him, he's absolutely fast. But when it drops out of that operational window, he struggles, and he struggles more than maybe Kimi.

"And that is on us. We just have to work it out with him how there can be such a difference in driving, in performance, because George is not half a second slower, three tenths slower than Kimi. That's just absolutely not the case.

"So, what is it that he doesn't like? What is it that we need to do in terms of modifying the car, setting it up in a different way for him to go fast? Because it's all there, the intelligence, the ability, the determination."
