Former WNBA first-round pick poised to make official debut

Leïla Lacan has yet to make her WNBA debut since being drafted 10th overall by the Connecticut Sun in 2024. However, that could shortly change, as the Sun announced that the French guard has officially been activated.

Lacan has spent the last couple of seasons overseas in France, most recently helping to lead the French National Team to a fourth-place finish at EuroBasket, averaging 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1 steals, and 0.5 blocks over six games. The Sun officially signed her to a rookie-scale contract in February.

To make space for Lacan, the Sun has waived center Kariata Diaby, who appeared in 13 games this season.

The Sun have had a difficult start to the season thus far, currently owners of the league’s worst record at 2-15 and losers of nine straight. So far, the team has been led by Marina Mabrey (15.2 points per game), Tina Charles (14.9 points), and Olivia Nelson-Ododa (8.9 points), and Jacy Sheldon (7.9 points).

Lacan can provide additional depth at the guard position, developing on a roster that is in a developmental stage. The 21-year-old was a member of the French Olympic team, averaging 4.2 points, 0.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1 steal in six games en route to the silver medal.
