When it rains, it pours. For the Cup Series drivers who were taking part in qualifying for the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway, that meant there was just one round Saturday.
And that worked out perfectly for Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin, who captured the pole position for Sunday's race after posting a lap time of 29.848 seconds, about half a second faster than Team Penske's Joey Logano.
Hamlin hasn't fared too well in recent races: he was 34th at Gateway and 31st at Sonoma. The Cup Series veteran is hoping that his display in Saturday's rain-shortened qualifying is a prelude to an impressive display in the race.

The 41-year-old Hamlin has two wins this year but is just 21st in the point standings. Another victory will go a long way toward cementing his place in the Cup Series playoffs.

Denny Hamlin took the pole in Saturday's qualifying. He posted the fastest time during the first round. The second round was canceled because of, meaning the first-round speeds were used to determine the starting order for the Ally 400.

Saturday's result was Hamlin's second pole of the 2022 Cup Series season. He also won the pole for the Coca-Cola 600.
