Despite the war, Ukraine remains a country with incredibly rich nature, history and culture. Here you can see granite canyons, underground caves, mountain lakes, ancient fortresses and unique parks capable of surprising even experienced travellers.

We have gathered places worth seeing while travelling around Ukraine. These locations are located mainly in the central, western and northern regions, farther from the frontline. Sofiyivka is one of Ukraine’s most famous landscape parks and a true masterpiece of garden and park art. It was founded in Uman in 1796 by the Polish magnate Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki as a gift for his wife Sofia. The idea for the park belonged to her: she wanted to create a space inspired by Greek and Roman myths.

The park resembles a living illustration of Homer’s Odyssey. It features rocks, waterfalls, grottoes, artificial ruins, bridges, pavilions and the underground Acheron River. According to legend, it was along this river that Charon carried the souls of the dead to the kingdom of shadows. A walk through Sofiyivka turns into a journey between ancient myths, romantic landscapes and carefully designed scenery.

What is especially impressive is the combination of nature and architecture: huge boulders, ponds, waterfalls and trees create the feeling that the park has existed here for centuries. Sofiyivka is suitable for a relaxed day trip or as part of a route through central Ukraine.

Buky Canyon is one of the most striking natural sites in central Ukraine. It is located on the Hirskyi Tikych River in Cherkasy oblast and impresses with granite cliffs, rapids, waterfalls and fast-flowing water.

This place is often called a small mountain corner in the middle of Ukraine’s flat landscape. The canyon is especially beautiful in spring and early summer, when the water becomes full-flowing and the banks are covered in greenery. Here you can have a picnic, walk along the cliffs or take photos amid wild landscapes.

Buky Canyon is well suited for those who love nature without excessive infrastructure. It is a place for rest, walks and contemplation: the sound of the water, the rocks and the forest create a feeling of complete escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Kamianets-Podilskyi is one of the most atmospheric historic cities in Ukraine. Its main gem is the medieval fortress, located on a rocky peninsula above the canyon of the Smotrych River.

The fortress looks as if it grew directly out of the rock. Its towers, walls, bridges and old gates create the impression of a real medieval citadel. The place looks especially striking at sunset, when the stone takes on a warm hue and the canyon falls into shadow.

Kamianets-Podilskyi’s Old Town is also worth exploring: narrow streets, the Armenian Market, churches, museums and cafés located in historic buildings. It is a destination for those who love history, architecture and walks through cities with centuries-old heritage.

Bakota is one of the most atmospheric places in Podillia. It is a former village on the banks of the Dniester that ended up in a flooded zone after the creation of a reservoir. Today, Bakota is known for its cliffs, picturesque landscapes and cave monastery.

This place combines water, rocks, forests and silence. Here you can walk along the shore, swim in the warm season, watch the sunset or simply enjoy views of the Dniester. Bakota is especially popular with those seeking peace and natural landscapes without large crowds.

The cave monastery adds a special atmosphere to the location. It reminds visitors that these places were inhabited many centuries ago, and today they combine history, religious heritage and wild natural beauty.

Optymistychna Cave in Ternopil oblast is one of Ukraine’s most impressive underground sites. It is a gypsum cave with a total mapped length of more than 260 kilometres. It is considered the longest gypsum cave in the world and one of the largest karst caves on the planet.

The cave is a real underground labyrinth with narrow passages, galleries and crystal formations. It attracts speleologists, researchers and people who want to see Ukraine from an unexpected angle — not above the ground, but deep beneath it.

Visiting Optymistychna requires preparation and the guidance of experienced guides. It is not a place for independent exploration, but that is exactly what makes it one of the most exciting adventures for travellers who enjoy real challenges.

Synevyr is the most famous highland lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians. It is located in Mizhhiria district of Zakarpattia oblast and surrounded by dense spruce forests.

The lake was formed as a result of a landslide that blocked the course of mountain streams. A small island lies in the middle of the lake, which is why Synevyr is often called the “Sea Eye”. The water here has a dark blue-green hue, while the surrounding mountains create a feeling of truly wild nature.

This place is suitable for a relaxing holiday, walks, photography and getting to know the nature of the Carpathians. Synevyr is especially beautiful in the warm season, when you can walk along the trails around the lake and enjoy the mountain air.

The Shatsk Lakes are an entire system of freshwater lakes in Volyn, the most famous of which is Svityaz. It is the largest natural lake in Ukraine, known for its clear water, sandy shores and pine forests.

Svityaz is often called the Ukrainian sea: in the warm season, you can swim, take boat rides, sunbathe on the beaches and walk along forest trails. Around the lakes, there are holiday bases, campsites and cosy villages.

The Shatsk Lakes are suitable for family holidays, quiet weekends or a longer journey through Volyn. It is a place for those who want to combine water, forest, fresh air and a calm rhythm instead of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Tustan is a unique rock fortress in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, located among steep cliffs in the Carpathians. In the Middle Ages, an important centre for salt extraction and export existed here, and the fortress controlled trade routes through mountain passes.

Today, Tustan is an open-air museum where you can see the remains of ancient structures, wooden stairs, observation platforms and incredible views of forests and mountains. The cliffs on which the fortress is located create a feeling of real adventure.

This place is especially popular with those who love history combined with active walks. Tustan is well suited for a day trip from Lviv or as a stop during a journey through the Carpathians.

Any trip around Ukraine, even the shortest one to a relatively safe region, requires insurance. It is not a formality, but part of preparing for travel in wartime.

Your insurance policy should cover war risks. Standard medical insurance often does not protect against injuries caused by shrapnel, blast waves or other consequences of war-related events. That is why, before departure, you should check whether the relevant risks are included in your policy.

In addition to insurance, keep offline maps, shelter addresses, the contact details of your insurer and loved ones, a power bank, cash and necessary medication at hand. During an air-raid alert, do not hesitate and go immediately to the nearest shelter.

Discover Ukraine beyond the usual routes! Choose war-risk insurance before your trip.

Any trip around Ukraine today requires preparation. Even if you plan to visit a region located far from the frontline, it is worth planning your route in advance, checking the security situation and preparing a basic set of items.

Before departure, make sure you have a valid document for crossing the border and an insurance policy with war-risk coverage. Standard medical insurance may not protect against injuries caused by shrapnel, blast waves or other consequences of war-related events, so war-risk coverage is essential.

A curfew is in force in all regions of Ukraine, although its hours may vary depending on the oblast. During this period, you should not be outdoors without a legal reason, and overnight journeys are best avoided altogether. Before travelling, check the current rules in the specific region, as restrictions may change.

Air-raid alerts may be announced both during the day and at night. Install an air-raid alert app on your smartphone, enable notifications and find shelters in advance near your hotel, railway station, café or other places you plan to visit. When you hear the signal, do not hesitate: go immediately to the nearest shelter or a safe indoor space following the “two walls” rule.

Delays to trains and buses are possible due to the security situation, damage to infrastructure or night-time movement restrictions. Therefore, d
