Zelenskyi states social media hate decreased following strikes on Yandex data centers
According to Cloudflare, bot traffic dropped to 57% of its peak after the first strike and subsequently collapsed to 0.4%.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi also drew attention to the decrease in bot activity across social media platforms. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, he noted that hostile posts diminished on numerous platforms after Yandex halted its operations.
Background
Currently, Yandex reports disruptions in at least 84 of its services. According to data from international internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, network traffic for Yandex Cloud dropped to 30% of standard levels, while Yandex LLC fell to 63%.
Problems with data center operations likely affected more than just the dissemination of disinformation. For ordinary Russian users, the disruptions could also mean slower internet speeds or a complete loss of access.
It should be noted that Ukrainian forces first attacked the company's data center on October 8, when reports emerged of a fire at the Sasta machine-tool plant in the Ryazan region, which houses a Yandex data center. The following day, part of the Russian Yandex data center infrastructure in Kaluga suffered damage.
Additionally, on the night of October 11, an attack hit a Yandex data center in the Russian city of Vladimir. Following the strikes, the facility suspended operations, and Russian users reported server outages.
The attacks followed multiple Russian drone strikes on data centers in Kyiv, including one targeting a Cosmonova facility, which forced the site to shut down and led several media outlets to report operational disruptions on September 26.
