Winter in the Carpathians 2026–2027: A Guide to a Comfortable Holiday
The Carpathians in winter 2026–2027 are perfect for skiing, thermal pools and spa breaks. Find out how to plan a comfortable trip
Snow-covered slopes, thermal pools, forest hotels and Transcarpathian cuisine make the Carpathians a destination where active adventures can easily be combined with relaxing downtime.
A winter trip to the Carpathians in the 2026–2027 season can offer much more than skiing alone. In just a few days, travellers can combine Bukovel with snow-covered trails, a trip to Transcarpathia, thermal pools, SPA treatments and evenings in a hotel overlooking the mountains.
For foreign tourists, the key is to plan the logistics properly. Ukraine currently has no civil air traffic, so the most convenient way to reach the Carpathians is by train or bus, followed by a transfer for the final part of the journey. Advance booking is also essential: during the peak season, accommodation near the slopes, equipment rentals and popular SPA complexes fill up quickly.
The winter season in the Carpathians generally runs from December to March, but skiing conditions vary depending on altitude, temperature and snow cover. In Bukovel, the 2026–2027 season is tentatively scheduled to run from 19 December to 4 April, although the actual operation of the slopes and lifts depends on weather conditions and technical factors. The resort has an artificial snowmaking system, but you should still check the current status of the slopes and lifts before travelling.
The busiest period falls around Christmas and New Year, as well as the first days of January. During this time, accommodation, ski passes and transfers become more expensive, while popular slopes and rental shops get busier. If you prefer lower prices and a quieter atmosphere, consider the second half of January, February, or weekdays at the beginning and end of the season.
In March, daylight hours are longer and sunny weather makes walking more comfortable. However, the snow may become softer in the afternoon. For a skiing trip, it is best to plan your runs for the morning, when the slopes are generally in better condition and less crowded.

Bukovel is Ukraine’s largest and most developed ski resort. It offers approximately 66.4 km of slopes and 22 ski lifts, with slopes located at altitudes of around 874 to 1,372 metres. The runs are classified as green, blue, red and black, making the resort suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers.
Beginners should start in the learning areas and on green runs rather than heading straight for longer routes. Bukovel has a ski school for adults and children, as well as rental shops where you can choose skis, a snowboard, boots, a helmet and protective equipment. An instructor is particularly useful for first-time skiers: a single lesson can help you learn to brake, turn and use the lifts correctly and more safely.
Experienced skiers can plan longer descents, tackle red and black runs, and try night skiing. According to the resort, daytime skiing runs from 08:30 to 16:30, while evening sessions take place from 15:00 to 19:30. The available slopes may change depending on weather conditions and technical factors.
It is best to buy your ski pass online or at self-service machines, if this option is available for the pass you need. Official prices for the 2026–2027 season depend on the period: a standard day pass costs UAH 1,600 in the low season, UAH 2,250 in the high season and UAH 2,800 on the holiday dates of 2–6 January. Prices are listed in Ukrainian hryvnias and may change, so check the current terms before paying.
Remember to budget separately for any deposit or card fee, equipment rental, instructor lessons, parking, meals and transfers to the slopes. A room in a nearby village may be cheaper than a hotel next to a ski lift, but you will need to factor in daily transport costs and travel time.
Transcarpathia is a good choice for the second part of a winter trip or for travellers who do not plan to ski every day. You can combine walks through mountain valleys, visits to castles and historic towns, tastings of local products, trips to lakes and waterfalls, guided winter hikes, or a relaxing stay at a hotel.
The region offers options for different travel styles. Active travellers can choose a mountain route, a jeep tour, a nature walk or an excursion to Lake Synevyr. If the weather is unstable, you can replace outdoor activities with a cultural programme featuring castles, museums, parks, local cuisine and tastings. For a complete break, spend a few days at a SPA complex, visit thermal pools and take leisurely trips between resort towns.
Visit Ukraine offers ready-made tours around Transcarpathia of varying durations, from one-day excursions to group and private programmes lasting several nights. Options include combinations of mountain destinations, Lake Synevyr, Shypit Waterfall, castles, thermal waters, water parks, gastronomic stops and relaxation in Shayan. This is convenient for foreign visitors who want to see more of the region without planning a winter road itinerary themselves.
When planning a winter tour of Transcarpathia, focus on travel time rather than the number of destinations. Avoid combining distant mountain locations, thermal baths and castles in a single day if snowfall is forecast. A more comfortable option is to plan one main activity per day and leave room to change your plans.
Thermal pools are one of the main reasons to visit Transcarpathia in winter. It may be freezing outside, but the water remains warm, making outdoor bathing a unique experience, especially after a walk or a day on the slopes.
The best-known thermal destinations are concentrated around Berehove, Kosyno, Velyatyno and other resort areas in Transcarpathia. Pool temperatures vary between complexes, and some facilities operate all year round. Before visiting, check opening hours, time limits for stays, pool rules, whether advance booking is required and whether card payments are accepted.
A thermal complex should not be treated like an ordinary swimming pool. Avoid spending too long in very hot water, take breaks, drink water and do not combine bathing with alcohol. People with cardiovascular conditions, pregnant women and anyone with other medical restrictions should consult a doctor beforehand.
Choose a SPA hotel based on the services it offers rather than just photos of its pool. Check whether the price includes a sauna, massage, hot tub, swimming pool, breakfast and transfers, and whether children are allowed to use the SPA facilities. For a winter trip, it is important to be able to move between your room, the restaurant and the pool indoors or without spending extended periods outside in the cold.
If you would rather not organise a separate trip to the thermal baths, Visit Ukraine offers day trips to the pools in Berehove and Kosyno, as well as the Karpatia water complex, along with multi-day SPA programmes in Transcarpathia. These options make it possible to combine transfers, guided assistance and visits to several destinations in a single itinerary.
For a skiing trip, the most convenient option is accommodation near a ski lift or close to a regular shuttle service to the slopes. A hotel next to the resort saves time during the morning preparations but may cost more. Staying in Polianytsia, Tatariv, Yaremche or another nearby settlement often gives you more options at different price points, but you will need daily transfers.
When booking, ask where you can store your skis, whether there is a boot dryer, whether transfers are available, whether you can rent equipment and whether early breakfast is offered. If you arrive by train or bus, check the distance from the station, check-in times and whether late arrival is possible.
In Transcarpathia, choose a hotel according to the purpose of your trip. In mountain areas, views from the room, access to trails, drying facilities and meal options may be important. Near Berehove, Kosyno or Velyatyno, you may want to prioritise thermal pools, SPA facilities, medical services and convenient transfers to nearby towns.
On Visit Ukraine, you can compare hotels, apartments and hostels as well as countryside complexes, check accommodation conditions and choose an option based on your dates, budget and number of guests. For a winter trip, read reviews about heating, road access after snowfall, backup generators, parking and the actual distance to the ski lift.
Book accommodation well in advance for Christmas and New Year. Check the cancellation policy, deposit requirements, tourist tax, additional charges for children, pet policies and whether SPA access is included in the room rate. If a hotel advertises a “mountain view”, ask which specific rooms offer it.
There is currently no air traffic in Ukraine, so foreign tourists need to plan their journey by train or bus. Trains can be convenient for travelling to Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Yaremche, Vorokhta, Mukachevo, Uzhhorod and other accessible cities, but the final part of the journey to a resort often requires a bus or transfer.
You can book bus tickets on Visit Ukraine. The platform allows you to search for international services to Ukraine and intercity routes within the country. An electronic ticket with a QR code is sent by email. This is particularly convenient for foreign travellers: Visa and Mastercard payments are accepted, and there is no need to print the ticket.
Plan your itinerary around the final connection. For example, you can take a train to a major city and then travel by bus or private transfer to Bukovel, Polyana, Slavske, Berehove or your chosen accommodation. Before paying, check the arrival time, bus station address, connection buffer and whether you can reach your hotel after an evening service.
For groups or families travelling with skis, a private transfer may be more convenient. It allows you to travel without changing vehicles, stop al
