Uzhhorod's Cinema of Neighbors festival enters shortlist for prestigious European award
Supporters can vote for "Cinema of Neighbors" online through the project link until October 12.
"Cinema of Neighbors" is an international festival that explores the cultural landscape of Zakarpattia through cinema. Its program brings together films from Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, and Romania — countries whose shared histories and experiences continue to resonate across the region. Admission to all festival events is free.
Organizers will announce the winners of the Art Explora – Académie des beaux-arts European Award on November 24 during a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The Art Explora – Académie des beaux-arts European Award recognizes non-profit cultural organizations, established jointly by the Art Explora Foundation and the French Académie des beaux-arts. It supports innovative projects that create fresh formats for interaction between art and audiences, break down social, economic, and geographical barriers, and scale effectively across Europe.
The award encompasses various fields of art and culture. Each year, 20 organizations make the shortlist, featuring their practices and projects in a special edition dedicated to Europe's best approaches to audience engagement.
Background
In Ukraine, the number of people with visual impairments is growing, making standard film consumption difficult or impossible. Despite the lack of unified state standards, Ukrainian film industry representatives are already adapting movies for blind viewers, and the government aims to mandate audio descriptions for state-funded films. Rubryka explored the inner workings of creating audio descriptions — from script selection to voice recording — along with the ongoing challenges accessible cinema faces.
