German FM Wadephul: Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports threaten a third of harvest with spoilage

According to him, delivery delays could hit vulnerable regions particularly hard:

"If shipments do not depart soon, the threat of famine arises. This applies precisely to regions that are already unstable, which could once again trigger new flows of refugees."

Wadephul called this another form of destabilization that Russia is pushing through its "ruthless expansionist aggression." The German Foreign Minister also recalled raising the issue of Russian attacks during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New York.

Separately, the minister emphasized the importance of municipal partnerships between the two countries. According to him, the local city and community level determines daily whether electricity, heating, schools, hospitals, and shelters continue to function after Russian attacks.

Wadephul announced that Germany plans to organize a round table next year with mayors from Ukrainian and German cities for a practical exchange of experience.

"What works on the ground? How can cities and communities support each other? Such an exchange can, for example, help Ukraine on its challenging path toward EU membership," he noted. According to Wadephul, the partnership works both ways: German communities can also learn a lot from their Ukrainian partners regarding critical infrastructure protection, preparing for power and communication outages, civil defense, and countering hybrid threats and disinformation.

Background

The 8th German-Ukrainian Conference on Municipal Partnerships takes place in Berlin from October 7 to October 9. It brings together representatives from Ukrainian and German communities, as well as participants from the municipal partnership network. Key topics of this year's conference include community resilience during wartime, practical support for Ukrainian municipalities, reconstruction, energy independence, civil defense, economic development, digitalization, and Ukraine's preparations for EU membership.
