Zelenskyy Says Russia Twice Targeted His Plane With Drones In Recent Weeks
Russia targeted the plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy twice in recent weeks, Zelenskyy told CBS News in an exclusive interview on September 15, UATV English reports.
According to the Ukrainian president, Russian drones targeted Moldova while his presidential aircraft was there, including during his return trip to Ukraine through Chisinau.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store previously said Zelenskyy’s plane was “almost hit” by a drone in Moldovan airspace as the Ukrainian leader departed for Oslo on September 9.
Zelenskyy told CBS News that one or two drones also entered Moldovan airspace during his return flight to Ukraine several days later. The incident had not previously been reported.
Ukrainian officials said at the time that all members of the presidential delegation were safe, but it remained unclear whether the incident was intentional. Zelenskyy said he believes the incidents were part of a Russian strategy aimed at intimidating him and other foreign leaders.
The Ukrainian president also pointed to a recent Russian drone strike on a passenger train carrying foreign dignitaries traveling to Ukraine, including senior European officials and former CIA Director David Petraeus. The attack forced the delegation to evacuate near the Polish border.
Zelenskyy said he believes Russia may have known that American and European officials were aboard the train when it was attacked.
The incidents come amid a broader increase in unidentified drones entering European airspace, some of which have been traced back to Russia. On September 15, NATO fighter jets shot down a drone in Lithuanian airspace for the first time, according to Lithuanian military officials cited by The Associated Press.
