Visiting Kamianets-Podilskyi: Safety and Insurance
Kamianets-Podilskyi: what to see, how safe it is for tourists, and why you should choose insurance with war-risk coverage
A trip to Kamianets-Podilskyi can be fascinating and relatively calm, but war-related risks apply throughout Ukraine. Foreign visitors should therefore arrange appropriate insurance coverage before crossing the border.
According to Visit Ukraine’s experience, Kamianets-Podilskyi is one of Ukraine’s most visited tourist destinations. The city attracts foreign visitors, history enthusiasts, photographers, families, and travelers who want to see a medieval fortress, a unique canyon, and the layered architecture of Podillia.

Kamianets-Podilskyi is located in the southwestern part of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, near the border with Chernivtsi Oblast and relatively close to the border with Moldova. The city lies in a deep canyon formed by the Smotrych River, while its historic center is surrounded by natural slopes and rocks.
The city is far from active hostilities in eastern and southern Ukraine. Kamianets-Podilskyi is not a frontline city and is not located in an area of ground combat. For this reason, many travelers consider it one of the more accessible and relatively calmer tourist destinations in the country.
At the same time, when traveling in Ukraine, it is important to consider more than just the distance to the frontline. War-related risks may include missile strikes, drone attacks, falling debris from intercepted targets, blast waves, fires, and damage to civilian infrastructure.

Khmelnytskyi Oblast is periodically targeted by Russian attacks involving strike drones and missiles. The most common threats to the region are kamikaze drone attacks and the passage of aerial targets, during which air-defense systems are activated.
On April 1, 2026, Russian forces attacked Kamianets-Podilskyi district with strike drones. Two civilians were injured and hospitalized as a result.
In September 2026, air-raid alerts were issued in Khmelnytskyi Oblast because of the threat posed by jet-powered drones. On September 1, the alerts concerned, among others, Khmelnytskyi and Kamianets-Podilskyi districts, while air-defense forces destroyed aerial targets.
On September 5, a Russian drone attack damaged businesses in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. Deaths and injuries were reported.
On September 13, air-defense systems were again activated in the region during a strike involving attack drones. Debris from a downed drone caused a fire at one of the businesses.
These incidents do not mean that Kamianets-Podilskyi experiences attacks with the same intensity as cities near the frontline or major energy centers. However, they show that western and central regions of Ukraine cannot be considered completely safe.
Useful to know: How to Choose Insurance for a Short Visit to Ukraine
Kamianets-Podilskyi is considered one of the relatively calmer cities in Ukraine for tourist trips. There are no active ground hostilities in the city, and the main tourist routes are located far from the frontline.
However, “relatively safe” does not mean “risk-free.” During their stay, tourists may face air-raid alerts and the need to enter a shelter, falling debris after air-defense operations, disruptions to electricity or mobile communications, train delays, and route changes. Tourist attractions may also close temporarily, while restaurants, museums, and public transport may operate with restrictions.
Before traveling, check the latest announcements from local authorities, use official alert channels, and do not ignore air-raid warnings. If an alert is issued, go to the nearest shelter, even if you are in the historic center or taking part in a guided tour.
Foreigners crossing Ukraine’s state border must have a valid medical insurance policy for the entire period of their stay. The document may be checked during the visa process or at the border. In many cases, visa procedures require coverage of at least EUR 30,000, so you should check the applicable requirements before traveling, depending on your nationality and the purpose of your visit.
The key difference is not whether you need insurance, but which type of policy you choose.
Medical insurance may cover sudden illness, everyday injuries, and emergency medical care. However, standard travel policies often contain exclusions for war, missile strikes, explosions, terrorist acts, military operations, and falling debris.
A policy with war-risk coverage is designed for situations that may arise as a result of military events. Depending on the contract, it may provide assistance in the event of injuries caused by a blast wave, debris from intercepted targets, a fire following an attack, or damage to civilian infrastructure.
For this reason, when traveling to Kamianets-Podilskyi, it is advisable to choose not only basic medical insurance, but also a policy with clearly stated war-risk coverage.

Kamianets-Podilskyi remains one of Ukraine’s most interesting tourist destinations and a relatively calm city to visit. Its distance from the frontline, historical heritage, fortress, and Podillian landscapes attract travelers from Ukraine and abroad.
