Canada Commits $270 Million for Air Defense Interceptors, Aiming to Help Rebuild Ukraine — Canadian PM Carney at Joint Press Conference With Zelenskyy
Canada will provide $350 million Canadian dollars (roughly $270 million USD) to purchase critical air defense interceptor missiles for Ukraine, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, UATV English reports.
“Canada and Ukraine have finalized an agreement on the acquisition of critically important air interceptors through the JUMPSTART mechanism. This $350 million equipment package will help protect the people of Ukraine, the country’s infrastructure, and its skies,” Carney said.
Carney framed the support in the context of Canada’s long-standing Ukrainian community, noting that Ukrainians first settled in Canada in 1893 and have maintained their heritage ever since.
“When I was growing up, my classmates had Ukrainian names, and their parents and grandparents spoke Ukrainian,” Carney said.
He added that Ukrainians helped build Canada, and that Canada will now help rebuild Ukraine.
“We must support Ukraine in its defense,” Carney said, also praising Ukraine’s role in advancing drone technology. “Ukraine is shaping the future of defense and security.”
Beyond the interceptor package, Carney said Canada will contribute additional funds to Ukraine’s Energy Support Fund and provide 430 million Canadian dollars (about $330 million USD) in credit guarantees to help Ukraine purchase natural gas through the winter season.
“We will also work closely together in the fields of energy and critical minerals to ensure reliable supply chains,” Carney said.
Carney said Canada is also coordinating closely with European allies on establishing a joint fund to support Ukrainian veterans.
“Right now we’re developing a new sanctions package against Russia, focused on anti-ballistic missiles and related components. We’re also constantly updating our sanctions against the shadow fleet, the financial sector, and those helping Russia,” Carney said.
He emphasized that Canada “will not wait for the results of coming months and will move as fast as possible.” “There are several initiatives regarding a ceasefire, and we will do everything possible to support them,” the head of the Canadian government noted.
Zelenskyy arrived in Canada for the bilateral visit the previous day, part of a trip that has also included discussions on Canada’s participation in the FREYJA anti-ballistic missile program and progress toward a bilateral drone cooperation agreement.
