Solutions from Ukraine: Kyiv starts pilot testing 5G mobile network before full launch after martial law ends
The ministry noted that preparations to launch the network in the capital lasted about six months. During this time, operators and specialists prepared the infrastructure to test the technology in real-world conditions.
The 5G network is now available in central Kyiv and in several other locations where mobile operators have deployed pilot base stations.
Before this, the technology was tested in Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka. According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, nearly 1.5 million Ukrainians have used the new network during testing, and more than 300 pilot network base stations are already operating across the country.
During the trials, data transmission speeds exceeded 1 Gbps. The rollout of 5G is expected to deliver faster, more stable mobile internet.
The ministry says the pilot project will help assess how the equipment and network perform under real load, allowing preparations for a large-scale 5G rollout after martial law ends.
According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, nearly 29% of smartphones used by Ukrainians already support 5G technology.
Odesa will be the next city to pilot test the fifth-generation network.
