Live: England vs. Germany

WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON — Gareth Southgate has 90 minutes left of match action before his team step out for their 2022 World Cup opener against Iran on November 21. He'll be hoping for a few more positives against Germany at Wembley after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Italy on Friday that saw him booed off by a section of England fans at full-time. The Three Lions will be hoping to end a run of five matches without a win, and three without finding the net, but they come up against a talented Germany side who also suffered a shock defeat to Hungary last time out. Will Southgate play his best XI? Will he hand Ivan Toney his England debut? We'll soon find out how we're looking ahead of Qatar. The Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates, commentary. MORE: Italy vs. England result, highlights & analysis as Raspadori strike condemns Three Lions to UEFA Nations League relegation Goals: None 8th min: Foden picks up a loose ball from the centre circle and drives at Germany's centre-backs before laying off a pass to Kane on the right. Foden and Raheem Sterling get in the box but the Tottenham striker's cross evades everyone. 5th min: A cagey start so far, Kane's having to drop fairly deep into the centre circle to try and get the ball for his team and start any attacks. 2nd min: Reece James links up with Kane down the right side but the latter's cross is blocked. We're underway! 2 mins from kickoff: National anthems and handshakes complete, here we go. A quick reminder of the starting XIs for both teams. England starrting lineup: Pope (GK) — Maguire, Dier Stones, — Shaw, Bellingham, Rice, James — Sterling, Kane, Foden Germany starting lineup: Ter Stegen (GK) — Raum, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Kehrer — Gundogan, Kimmich — Sane, Musiala Hofmann, — Havertz 5 mins from kickoff: The players are in the tunnel. Football's coming home is being played over the tannoy and the rain is holding off... for now. Wembley's not quite full just yet but the last few supporters are taking their seats. Not long to go! 15 mins from kickoff: A few words from England captain Harry Kane ahead of kickoff. "We need to be more clinical. We got into really good areas [in Friday's game against Italy] but didn't have the final pass, run or finish. In these big games those are the fine margins," he told Channel 4. "It [not scoring] has been frustrating for sure. I love scoring goals, as do all attacking players. We just haven't been able to do that well in an England shirt. We'll keep our heads down and keep working hard. "It is great to see all the fans here. We'll want to start well and we'll need to play well on the ball first and foremost and goals create happy fans so it is our aim." Germany are unbeaten across their last six away games against England (W5, D1), with a goalless draw in November 2017 ending a run of five consecutive wins for the visitors [Not including Euro 2020]. England are winless in five matches (D2, L3) for the first time since June 2014 and have failed to score in three successive internationals for the first time since November 2000. Not since between April and June 1993 have The Three Lions endured a longer winless run, while only once in their history have they failed to score in four successive games (April to May 1981). 45 mins from kickoff: So what happened last time the two nations met? The reverse Nations League fixture at the Allianz Arena in June ended in a 1-1 draw as Harry Kane's 88th minute penalty cancelled out Jonas Hofmann's opener. Of course, the time before that should give England the psychological advantage with the Three Lions recording a famous 2-0 win in the last-16 of the European Championships last year. Kane was again on the scoresheet as he added to Raheem Sterling's opener with a second goal in 11 second-half minutes. 60 mins from kickoff: The teams are in! Southgate makes two changes from the defeat to Italy with John Stones and Luke Shaw coming in for Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka. Your #ThreeLions to take on Germany! 🦁 pic.twitter.com/dHcpm0Qnim— England (@England) There's four changes to Germany's side that lost to Hungary with Thilo Kehrer, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala and Nico Schlotterbeck given the nod. Antonio Rudiger, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Timo Werner all drop out. Our starting XI to face @England 📋#ENGGER pic.twitter.com/gUSHmj7PlE— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) 75 mins from kickoff: As for Germany, a first defeat under Hansi Flick last time out was a shock to the system. But what isn't a shock is their struggles up top in front of goal. It took them 37 minutes to register a shot on target against the Hungarians. Timo Werner started up front for that one. Will Kai Havertz get the nod tonight? Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala are all options in the forward positions too, of course. Who are you hoping to see start tonight? 👕#ENGGER pic.twitter.com/hfbc2RIgZI— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) 90 mins from kickoff: Plenty of talk in the build up to tonight's match has entered around the boos Southgate received and the criticism of recent performances. Southgate said: "The results haven't been at the level we want, that we require, so no matter what job you have in football that would be the case. "Of course with the national team that noise is going to be louder and more widespread - I understand that. "I'm not hiding from it. We are not enjoying it but we have to keep doing the right things every day to keep improving." But with this the last chance for England fans to see their side before they head to Qatar in November, Southgate has urged supporters to give them a good send off. “We’ve got 90,000 people, the stadium’s sold out,” Southgate said ahead of Monday’s Group A3 encounter. “People want to come and see this team play. “I would urge the supporters to get behind the team. How they deal with me at the end or whenever, on the phone-ins or whatever else, is completely different. “But this is their last chance to see the boys before they go to the World Cup and we’re all in it together. “We can only succeed if we’re all pushing in the same direction and we’ve all got that positive energy towards doing well. “What happens to me is irrelevant, frankly. It’s about the team. The most important thing is the team and the success of the team.” 120 mins from kickoff: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of England vs. Germany. For once, in a meeting between these two rivals, there's not much at stake following the Three Lions' relegation. But that won't stop pride and the final World Cup preparations for both teams being the main focus of tonight's encounter, which should make for fascinating viewing.
