While players have opted in/out of contracts and free agent rumors swirl, the first major trade of the NBA offseason broke on Wednesday. The Spurs are trading guard and budding star Dejounte Murray to the Hawks for a package of picks and forward Danilo Gallinari, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The trade signals the culmination of recent rumors that San Antonio was surprisingly planning to move on from the All-Star. Now, Murray heads to Atlanta to pair with another All-Star guard in Trae Young.
The Knicks were also rumored to make a push for Murray to pair with their rumored free-agent acquisition, Jalen Brunson.
Murray is coming off his best season of his career, averaging 21.1 points and shooting 46 percent from the floor, while also setting a career high in minutes (34.8) for Gregg Popovich's Spurs. Now, he heads to Hotlanta.

Murray is still under contract through the next two seasons on a team-friendly deal, making $34.2 million over the next two seasons, including $16.5 million this upcoming season.
Important context of the trade that remains unclear, however: Danilo Gallinari's contract converted and became fully guaranteed at 5 p.m. ET, but the news of the trade broke after that 5 p.m. marker. It appears that Gallinari's salary, now set at $21.450, is fully guaranteed for the 2022-23 season, unless more details emerge to the contrary.
The move pairs two backcourt All-Stars in Murray and Trae Young. It's unclear how the two will pair, but it will likely push Trae Young as an off-ball guard.
