Kyrgios spits at fans in dramatic five-set victory

Nick Kyrgios has defeated wildcard Paul Jubb via a dramatic five-setter in the first round of Wimbledon 2022. The Australian was strongly favoured coming into the match but was made to work for the result, eventually coming out on top 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-7 7-5. It was a controversial afternoon on Court 3, with Kyrgios involved in a number of confrontational incidents involving the line judge and members of the crowd. Just three games into the match, the line judge appeared to make a complaint to the umpire regarding the 27-year-old, but it is not known exactly what was said. Kyrgios took exception to this, labelling the line judge a 'snitch' in an explosive rant towards the umpire. "Has one person today come to see her speak? No ... why is she doing that?" Kyrgios said. "Not one person in the stadium has come here to watch her do anything. Not one person. Like, you know what I mean? "I know you got fans, but she got none (sic). What did I do? "Come on ... she just selfishly walks to you in the middle of a game because she's a snitch. Like, come on now." Kyrgios was aggravated further by heckling spectators, with the Australian tennis star at one point hitting a ball out of Court 3 and onto nearby Church Road. He then continued to vent to the chair umpire between games. "They're spectators who spend money to come watch us play. They should be removed," he said. "I don't go up to their face ... and start clapping when they start scanning s*** at a supermarket, do I? "Like, 'Booooo, yeah, well done, you can't scan that piece of s***'. Like, do I say that? No. "They have no right to do that. So, why does it keep happening?" At the conclusion of the match, he spat in the direction of fans before going on to justify his actions. "[I spat] in the direction of one of the people disrespecting me, yes," he explained. "I would not do that to someone who was supporting me.” Swear Kyrgios spits at some bloke in the crowd who was cheering for Jubb. 😆 Mad’ead! #Wimbeldon2022 pic.twitter.com/gkQWHhv6BY— Mark Conway (@MarkConway87) Outside of Kyrgios' outbursts, it was still an enthralling first round match-up. Jubb claimed the first set but lost the following two, before pulling his way back into the clash with a tough-fought tiebreak win in the fourth set. Kyrgios, however, was able to edge out the deciding set to book himself a spot in the second round at the All England Club, serving 30 aces in the process. "The crowd was pretty rowdy today," he said in his on-court interview. "A couple of people in the crowd were not shy of criticising me. So, that one was for you. You know who you are." He will next face No. 26 seed Filip Krajinović.
