Prince William is supporting innovative methods that aim to promote mental health.
On day two of his visit to Scotland, the Duke of Cambridge paid a visit to Edinburgh's Heart of Midlothian Football Club to witness The Changing Room, a program run by Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) that uses football as an opportunity for men to tackle their emotional well-being. William's visit is particularly pertinent as he arrives during Mental Health Awareness Week.
There, he met with participants from the program, as well as toured Tynecastle Stadium. He also accepted gifts for his children: three Heart of Midlothian football jerseys that had his children's names—Princess Charlotte, Prince George, and Prince Louis—spelled out on the back.
"We were delighted to welcome the Duke of Cambridge to The Changing Room today," SAMH's chief executive, Billy Watson, said. "It is a program that we are immensely proud of and that we know has made a difference to so many men's lives. The Changing Room shows us that while men sometimes struggle to talk about how they feel, when the environment is right and when men feel supported, they are not just good at talking, they are actually great at it. It has been fantastic to see Scottish football really embrace the importance of mental health and well-being."
Kristian Wilson, a participant of The Changing Room, spoke to the program's efficacy after he suffered from a period poor mental health. "It made me feel less lonely and it was such a relief to be open and honest about my mental health," he said. "The Changing Room was nonjudgmental, and helped me to move on to better and bigger things in life."
