Zelenskyy shares how Russia attempted his political elimination

Source: Zelenskyy's interview with the Russian press. Direct quote: "I heard a lot of rumours about how my elimination was being planned... Surely, there must have been several attempts by different people. I feel pretty calm about this. Some of these people were already disarmed, the political ones...If we are talking about my political elimination, that was the party around Medvedchuk - himself a godfather to the current Russian leader. They were finding political means of disruption. During the local elections there was so much propaganda. Weakening governance on the local level. But those actions turned out to be one of the main main reasons why after my election victory, our party also secured a stable majority in parliament. Afterwards they realised that russian influence was waning - and it's power over Ukrainian politics was waning even faster. This was quite a shock for them, so they chose a different tactic - a tactic based on winning over the individual regions." Details: Zelenskyy explained that the government of the Russian Federation chose such a tactic, as they understood that even though Ukrainian presidential elections guaranteed democratic control over the government, it didn't mean anything on the actual local governance level. Direct quote: "Generally speaking that was their (the pro-russian lobby's) strategy - to rise from local councils to local elections and then enter parliament. And in general it worked- they got re-elected to parliament over and over. They were really desperate to get in. There were coalitions between left and right candidates - even a centrist coalition. And all of this was done to disrupt the process of governance. The goal was to create overall instability in the country - unstable economy, everything going down, chaos in parliament. All this destabilisation was needed just so that, having power on the regional governance level, they could then dismantle governmental rule. The chaos in the economy and political instability in Ukraine were always one of the tools of to the escalation used by the Russian Federation - even before the current Russian president. It is just that in the pas they could occupy our country a lot quicker. That was definitely in the plans then. I am saying this not on the basis of foreign intelligence, but primarily our own services. But in the end this destabilisation didn't work. (...) And when they so that it is not all turning out, naturally, they figured an alternative - to do the maximum to neutralise those who are stabilising the situation in parliament. And when there is a war and martial law - who is the guarantee of said stability? Only the president - given the powers under current legislation of independent Ukraine. "
