The World Health Organization is convening an emergency meeting to discuss the monkeypox outbreak, which has now infected more than 100 people in Europe. This is reported by The Telegraph and Reuters , citing their sources.
The meeting will include the STAG-IH group, which advises WHO on infectious risks that may pose a threat to global health. It includes scientists from around the world and is chaired by David Heymann, Professor of Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
At the same time, the WHO noted that they are holding daily meetings on monkeypox, as the virus continues to spread around the world. Among the main issues is vaccination against the disease.
The disease, first discovered in monkeys, is usually spread by close contact and rarely spreads outside of Africa, so this case series was a concern.
According to information on the WHO official website, the organization was first informed about a new disease on May 7 - then a person infected with smallpox arrived in the UK.
Monkeypox is usually a mild viral illness, with symptoms including fever and a characteristic rash.
